The most common rental scam in Europe is the deposit-before-viewing trick. If anyone asks you to transfer money before you have seen the property in person, treat it as a red flag.
Seven checks before you sign
- View in person — video calls do not replace a real visit.
- Verify the landlord — ask for ID and proof of ownership, and check that the names match.
- Read the full contract — term, notice period, rent increases and subletting rules should all be written down.
- Use protected deposits — many countries require deposit protection schemes; cash deposits without receipts are a warning sign.
- Pay by bank transfer — always with a clear payment reference.
- Record meter readings — photograph gas, water and electricity meters on move-in day.
- Keep evidence — save the listing, chat history and receipts; report scams to the police and to the platform.
Warning signs
- Rent far below market price for the area
- A landlord who is "abroad" and can only post you the keys
- Pressure to pay today because "others are waiting"
- Cash, gift cards or crypto as the only accepted payment
One rule: no viewing, no verified landlord, no money.
